Hello everybody!
I'm a newbie here, so I'd like to introduce myself first. My name is Anniina and I'm an aquarist-girl from Finland. Soon I'll be 19 years old and I have had this aquaria hobby for nearly all my life.
Now I bought my first Midas cichlid and I decided to join you! Smile He/she lives in my 500 liter tank with two Oscars and a pleco, Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus. Another Oscar is leaving soon.

I'd like to know if my Midas was one of the original specie form. He/she is black/grey - white striped and at the moment he/she is only 15cm long. Here is a pic:

What do you think, is it possible that my fish is wild Midas?
And what do you think about it's gender? Too young to have a humb, but is there some another marks to recognize it's gender? Males have usually longer fins?

Thank you! Very Happy

Hi Anniina, welcome to the Midas forum!

You have a nice Midas. I think it is pure Midas (Amphilophus citrinellus) because it has stripes that a Red Devil (A. labiatus) has never had.

About gender, we need to look at its vent. Could you please take another picture showing its vent?

Thats a very nice barred midas. In my experience both sex will have long fins, but that depends. You'll have to vent the barred midas to sex em'...also your barred midas will not change color. Its very possible that it is wild, but there's alot of import breeders.

Thank you! I will photograph it more, when I've got time enough!

Ozzy: I had good luck, it cost only 5,20 euros! I think it was extremely cheap! How much they are usually in your country? Smile

Okay, now I've got some new pics!

http://kuvablogi.com/nayta/iso/img43238.jpg Aggression!

http://kuvablogi.com/nayta/iso/img43243.jpg Here we can see the vent.. I think it's male? Or is it? In my opinion it looks too narrow to be female.. And the nuchal hump seems a bit bigger than before... Well, okay, this fish is my first Midas, so maybe you know this better than I do! Very Happy

http://kuvablogi.com/nayta/iso/img43237.jpg Something wrong with his eyes? What do you guys think, are they too much out of his head? I think they look a bit strange, but it may be my imagination! Wink

http://kuvablogi.com/nayta/iso/img43239.jpg Hello guys! Smile

I am not the best at venting but I would also say Male :dunno:

As for the eyes, they are ok. It is normal for them to bulge a bit Very Happy
