females develope humps too but their humps are smalelr than the males humps
it depends more of size than age when they are 8 inch sometimes 7 they start to develope them but it also depends of tankmates feeding and many more things
maxium size in most cases is 40 cm for male female is always smaller

when they're one inch they're too small to check is or a male or female
convict and texas is a good tankmate but it depends of the size of tank

i currently have my midas housed in a 55 with 2 baby oscars and a little convict. i will be transfering them into a 125 when it is fully ready for them. for now they seem to be doing well however the midas has that little convict in check thats for sure. when the midas approuches him he plays dead . it's the strangest thing i have ever seen a convict do. does a midas eat insects and small fish and stuff like the oscars? i do feed them all cichlid pellets but occasionally i feed baby guppies i have been breeding and crickets and worms and such.

midas is head grows bigger when about 6 mouths, they grow about to 16 in and NO tank mates should be good for it except the RED DEVIL.. and maybe flowehorn or trimac

rd is not a good tankmate for midas beacuse there is a risk that they will crossbreed and it is not true that grownig of the hump starts when the fish is 6 month

I agree that there isnt really a 'good' tank mate for the midas. You take the big chance of loosing any fish you put in with the midas. Some people do it with luck, and some people do it with alot of trouble. I have one midas, he is fully grown I am taking the chance on putting to more midas with him...let you know how that goes a little later on Smile

Yes, male always has nuchal hump but not all male has big nuchal hump. It depends on gene that male get from his parents.

I think it is when the fish mature. With Midas, it is from 6 month to 1 year.

With me, 20-25 cm (10'') after 1-1.5 year. None of my fish grows bigger but I saw a fish growing up to 35 cm (15'').

If you keep fish in a group, you can guess some bigger ones are the males. But if you keep fish alone, you have to wait until fish mature (over 6 months) to see the vent.

I suggest you create some hiding places in the tank for smaller fish but there is a problem, you will nerver see them showing up! Besides, pleco and gourami are also very good tank mates for Midas.
