How big do they have to get before you can tell that a fish is defiantly a male or female ?

It is about 6 months. I keep a group of 3-5 fish. The males will grow much bigger then the females. I really don't have to watch their vents.

may I ask what size tank you are keeping the group in?

Its 55 gallon /midas minimum at full grown!

so 5 midas/RD so 275 gallon tank is what I'm hoping you have!
At least a 200 gallon Smile

No, I don't have that big tank. I keep them when they are juveniles, when they grow up to about 10 cm (4") then I can see a pair. I leave a pair and take other fish out.
