Hello. We recently bought a midas cichlid. he is a very beautiful bright orange color. he recently started getting black under his gills and on the tips of his fins.. is this just normal coloration change or could something be wrong? we have tested our water and all the parameters are where they should be. he is not acting strange at all. any advice?

When you say all water parameters are where they should be, can you please post the exact readings?

Ammonia nitrItes and nitrAtes.

How old is he?

Some do get the black coloration. Most of the time on fins and tail.
In most cases it is normal.

Also if you could post pictures we could help you better.

I'm pretty sure it's normal on these species. I have limited experiance with them but mine went through the same thing but mines black color went away. Strange. My goldfish changed color as they grew as well...many fish do. Some fin rot cna appear black though so keep an eye on him, I'm pretty sure it's normal in this case if it's also on the gills.
Check your ammonia and other parems as well, ammonia burns can look black in coloration.
