I'v been using a tap water filter. For those who dont know it takes your hardness and ph down and or out of your water. I'v got well water my hardness is about 28 total grains the filter takes it down to 6 grains. Anyways back to what i want to address for two weeks i havn't used it and my midas rd and my green terror lost they'r humps. So I would thing other than genes and agression ect. water quailty has a major roll in a hump.

You are correct, they need good water to have a large hump and to remain avery active. What i have also found that clean water also raises my fishes agression. Twisted Evil

good water with the right parameters for your cichlid will improve alot of things like growth, hump, activeness...and etc.
